There are 2 "depressions" on each end cap, 90 deg.s apart. The spanner wrench has 2 prongs that fit in these depressions and allow you to loosen and tighten the caps.

If you've ever worked on a Yamaha Trim/tilt motor, you know what I mean...

the seal guide is used as a protective cover.

This guide will slide over the threads of the cylinder shaft, this allows you to slide the new glands over the threads without damaging the seals.

I will be honest to say that not all users use this, and are successful at the seal change, but. I have had a few that have not used it and it led to a damage seal..

thanks and hope that this helps

No thats ok Bob you were a big help with the difference between the two part numbers. I ordered the 5167 and thought it was the wrong one for my unit.

Well, thanks to Pine Mountian, the range between Atlanta and Columbus, we were protected from the cold. Our weather has been OK. Went to Destin last weekend. Boy did the wind blow. My older son and I tried to make it offshore, made about 5 miles and turned around. Seas tooooo tall for us. Boat ran well. Ya'll take care.

Tom,
Down here, the wind has just been ridiculous this winter/spring! Even when we get a nice day, it blows 15-20, 8-10 in the morn. The ride out is tough, and ride in is...well, you can imagine, especially when it's from the east, on an outgoing...

Should be an interesting summer... :2261_high:

Bob
I tried to change the seals on my HC5345 and i'm having a hard time getting the support brackets off. Any tricks? there is no corrosion on the bolts.

The support brackets have likely taken a "set". Spray all 4 points (2 on either side) liberally with PB Blaster, several times. Then lightly tap with a short length of 2 X 4 and a hammer. Make sure you back the knurled fitting on the starboard side off. Allen head machine screw, then CW towards the motor...

When I install a cylinder, those supports go on like butter...but crap gets up in there and takes a hold... :753_hammer_hitting_head:

Bob I'm sorry to sound ignorant but where is the knurled fitting and allen screw? I'm not at the boat so I cant visualize it.

RJ,
On the starboard side of the cylinder where it enters the tilt tube, there is a stainless washer, a thin spacer, and the knurled fitting closest inboard to the motor. It's function is to tighten up the cylinder to the motor. It's held in place by an allen head machine screw and lock nut. Loosen the screw, then rotate the fitting CW towards the motor. It probably is placing pressure on the support that may be binding them up...

I was looking at my seals, thinking about replacing them, the ones on there now have six indentations on them and new ones seem to have four, was that just a change in design,or am i not looking at the right replacements.

Scott,
Just looked in the book, you should have the 5345 cylinder on your motor so these should be the right seals. We'll see what Marc has to say tomorrow...
