DT,
No, wire it off the existing switch in parallel. That's how foot switches are wired...

I want to install it down in the cabin near the anchor locker the anchor rode seems to know when I am fishing alone and likes to slip on the windless at the splice once and a while, if I put tension on the rope with my hand it comes right in. I have retied the tapered splice from the 8 plait to the chain a few times and it still slips once and awhile. It can be a real pain when I am alone.

Sorry for the windlass-challenged question...but can you rough up the barrel of the windlass so it will grip the rode better?

Tjhanks for the suggestion Hugh I already tried that with out much change, like I said it only happens once in awhile maybe once in ten but when it happens it is very annoying. The switch wont be to much of a problem to do and I will be covered when I am aloneI anchor alot near some bridges for stripers in the spring not a good place to get caught with your anchor hanging.

I went to college on the East River in the Bronx. I taught sloop sailing to noobs...21 to 26 foot hulls. The tide out to Long Island sound ripped under the Throggs Neck bridge, as did the wind. No, under a bridge is a bad place...high velocity tides, bridge abutments and piers, and wacky winds. I've dropped spreaders in the water under the Throggs Neck twice...nearly swamping two sloops. Learned to go storm jib or motor only until we got past the bridge

If I'm ever in your area of NY take me out on the stripers...I want some fresh meat in the locker...getting tired of lakers and landlocks :605_thumbs_up:
