Ok is this a Hydraulic steering RAM?

Postby Chesapeake Troller » Fri Jun 25, 2010 7:17 pm

Bob C forgive my ignorance here but I thought my steering system for my 200 Johnson was Hydraulic but after showing the pics below the dealership is telling me mechnical. Can you verify? Next question is this type of steering not robust enough for moving up to a Zuki 250 4S? Last question is what complete kit do I need to get to replace this if that is the way to go?

Thanks for the help.

Thats a mechanical cable streering system. While it probably would turn the 250 the effort involved in driving would be something akin to driving an 18 wheeler without power steering

Kinda, sorta...
You most likely have an old Teleflex NFB system, cable, and not bad to 150HP, as the 150s have a lot less weight than 200/250s. A new Teleflex Seastar Hydraulic System is what you need. Will run you around $750, uninstalled, includes helm, cylinder, hoses and fluid. But it will make a world of difference. The install you can do yourself, I'll walk you through it if you want.

But the old cable system? Gotta go...

Thanks, need to pick your brain too, am thinking to go ahead and get this upgrade done here before I go down to Naples and have the dealer install the new motor and have them switch out the steering They are expensive for that sort of thing

CT,
This about the best price I could find for the HC5345 Cylinder (what your Suzi needs) along with the 5271 helm pump, which is about the most common helm used. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-SEASTAR-HYDRAULIC-STEERING-SYSTEM-4-OUTBOARD-MOTORS-/380246151018?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Boat_Parts_Accessories_Gear&hash=item58886fcf6a#ht_545wt_931

You may want to give them a call and ask about the cost of hoses. iboats has some pretty good prices on hose kits, http://www.iboats.com/Seastar-reg-Outboard-Hose-Kit/dm/cart_id.047917282--session_id.914712569--view_id.40309, but I'd look around on ebay also.

Bob,

With my 23 foot 1988 Proline W/A with bracket I am thinking a 18 foot hose length should be ok. Agree or do you think a different length is better? Remember this model the Cabin/helm station is a bit farther forward than most of the newer W/A models I have seen.

Thanks!
