Correct steering cable grease

Postby Hugh » Mon Mar 22, 2010 1:10 pm

Gents,
What is the best way to grease the steering cable for an outboard? I've seen aftermarket cable nuts with a grease zerk attached...but do the nipples at the outboard bracket (through which the cable passes) also serve the purpose?

What kind of grease is the best for this application? :1992_beer_cheer

I got my question answered today.

My local boat repair yard (1 mile from my house, but they don't do Yammis) showed me the special zerk-nut you can screw onto the cable, but it only lubes what is visible, and a short distance into the cable. He said every 3-5 years the grease dries out in cable and it's time for a new one. Not much can be done.

There ya have it :1121_wink:

grease the cable, some of it may work its way toward the inner areas , cable failure is often at/near ends anyway.
a little grease in the right place does wonders,
certainly will not shorten cable life and likely lengthen it.

The problem with cable rod ends is that as the rod extends outward while steering to starboard, it wants to push the grease out of the tilt tube. The key is keeping the grease IN the tilt tube...

Lestter,
Yes, I got them, sorry for not replying. Right now I can't get the struts, so you might want to try another source. Check out the vendor links forum at outfits like Defender or Great Lakes Skipper. Maybe Marine Surplus....
